Signs Your Pet May Need Emergency Care

You know your pet better than anyone. If something doesn’t seem right—if they’re acting strange, won’t eat, are breathing differently, or just don’t seem like themselves—it’s okay to trust that feeling. Emergencies don’t always look dramatic. If you’re worried, we’re worried.

What to Do If You Think It’s an Emergency

Move your pet to a quiet area. Speak softly and keep them calm. Call us before you leave if you can—we’ll let you know what to do next and get ready for your arrival. If you’re alone or overwhelmed, ask someone to come with you.

Start by checking their breathing—look for fast, shallow breaths or any signs of distress. Lift their lip and check their gums. Healthy gums should be pink and moist, not pale, blue, gray, or sticky. Gently press a finger to the gums and see how quickly the color returns; it should happen in under two seconds.

If your pet is bleeding, apply steady, gentle pressure with a clean cloth or towel. If they’re choking or have something stuck in their mouth, don’t try to remove it—just keep them calm and come straight in.

Most importantly, do not give any human medications unless directed by a veterinarian.
Emergency Care at Home: What You Can Check
Bring your pet in right away if they’re having trouble breathing, have collapsed, suffered trauma (like being hit by a car), are bleeding heavily, or seem weak, unresponsive, or in visible pain. These are true emergencies—and waiting can make things worse.

Other urgent signs include seizures, exposure to toxins, bloated abdomen, or difficulty urinating. If something feels serious, it probably is.

Not sure? Call us. We’re here to help you figure it out and walk you through what to do next. Whether it’s a true emergency or not, you won’t have to make that call alone.
When to Go to the Emergency Vet Immediately
At Emergency Pet Hospital of Glendora, we’re locally owned, which means we answer to our patients, not a parent company. That gives us the freedom to focus on what matters most: practicing high-quality medicine, delivering exceptional service, and leading with real compassion.

You’ll work with experienced doctors who explain the plan, a team that makes sure nothing gets missed, and people who understand how scary an emergency feels—and go out of their way to treat you with empathy, not indifference.
We treat emergencies like they’re personal—because they are.

We work closely with local veterinarians across the San Gabriel Valley to make sure your pet’s care doesn’t stop when their office closes. If your vet refers you to us, we’ll keep them updated and make sure they’re looped in every step of the way.

Whether it’s a late-night emergency or something that just couldn’t wait, we act as an extension of your primary care team—so your pet gets the continuity they need, and you get the confidence of knowing everyone’s on the same page.
Working With Your Primary Care Veterinarian

Amazing people, so kind and caring, I can't tell you how appreciative I am that this place is here and exists! To the staff; Thank You All! I saw how caring you all are not only to my baby but to so many others, and to us, the ones who love and care for them on a daily. Your job is not an easy one, but you all do it with so much heart Thank you again! And to anyone who needs a vet, Please if you need take your pets anywhere, I can't recommend them enough! - Stacy M. Amazing care! Saved my Zeus! - Jo Had a great experience with the doctor taking care of my Milo. He explained everything in simple terms and thoroughly. If only they were a routine vet clinic, would definitely choose them. It’s hard finding caring vets instead of ones that only see your pet as a dollar sign. - Carolina C. This is my go to ER for my pets. The staff and doctors are always so kind, understanding, and thorough any time I need to bring my dog Coco in. Coco is a very adventurous GSP and is constantly getting herself into trouble but the staff at the Glendora ER has her back and mine. As a pet parent we often panic because we can’t understand what our pets need when they are injured or ill but thankfully the staff and Doctors have always been able to calm my worries any time Coco has needed their services. I’m so grateful for the staff and all they do to keep Coco healthy. - Daisy P. Took my dog for emergency services. The staff was very kind and helpful. My Pet is feeling much better. Highly recommend. - Angel B. What Clients Are Saying
