Frequently Asked Questions
Lesson will end at the scheduled time regardless of start time. Any rider 20 min late will complete the lesson unmounted.
Group lessons often offer more than private lessons for multiple reasons.
There are also times when a private lesson is needed. All beginners who are not yet able to control their horse in a group, will start out on a lunge line to learn their basic balanced position. Also, any rider struggling with a green horse would be best riding in a private lesson. NCE will always give the horse and rider the best choice for their needs.
- Riders are able to learn from each other and take breaks as they watch others do the exercise. Often there is a mix of ages and abilities, so a less experienced rider gets to see the advanced rider. The less experienced riders watch and learn and become accustomed to performing in front of people and are less intimidated at shows. Less experienced riders watching their peers advances them at a much more rapid rate. The group is always taught to the top of the class.
- Groups help riders understand the dynamics of spacing in groups and “ring etiquette”. Horse show schooling areas and flat classes can often be crowded and overwhelming, and our groups prepare students for that situation.
It is not unusual for our furry friends to be feeling especially frisky on any given day. When this happens the lesson plan may be modified based on the skill, experience and confidence of the rider and may include lunging, long lining, driving or round penning. If a horse is experiencing an uneven gait we will modify the lesson plan for the day to suit the needs of the horse. If a lesson mount is unable to be ridden then another horse will be selected, however if no other mount is available then a make-up lesson will be scheduled.
There are no discounts for missed lessons or holidays. There is no extra charge when a month holds 5 lessons in the month. If the instructor cancels then a substitute teacher will be provided. If a substitute instructor isn’t available then make ups will be scheduled. If the student cancels then make ups may be scheduled based on availability but are not guaranteed. In the case of vacations, up to 4 make-up lessons may be scheduled per month, based on availability. Lessons may not be carried over to the next month.
Venmo or Zelle requests will be sent out at the end of each month for the next month. Payment is due by the 5th of each month.
Lessons canceled 24 hrs in advance are considered “excused” and may be rescheduled based on availability, but are not guaranteed. No-shows or last minute cancellations are considered “unexcused” and may not be made up. If a rider has 3 “no shows”, their spot in the program will be forfeited with no refunds.
Up to 4 make up lessons may be scheduled per month based on availability.
Yes, NCE accepts state and county vouchers for both Complementary Therapies (private therapeutic lessons, mounted or unmounted) and Respite (unmounted groups).
NCE has a limited amount of scholarship funds to be distributed each year. All veterans and first responders have access to a full scholarship in either our therapeutic mounted or unmounted programs. All children in foster care have access to a full scholarship in either our mounted or unmounted programs, whichever is available. Other scholarship funds may be awarded for therapeutic riding/horsemanship and Respite if available. Scholarship requests forms are available by contacting northcascadesequus@gmail.com
Each horse has a weight restriction based on their overall size and body conformation. In order to keep our herd happy and healthy, each horse also has restrictions on how many lessons they do per day and per week and what activities take place during the lessons. Each lesson horse also receives regular training tune ups to keep them mentally and physically at their best.
