Your beloved pet is a member of your family, and we are here to help you keep your furry friend safe from disease and danger. One of the easiest things you can do to keep your dog healthy is to have them vaccinated! Staying up to date ensures your pup is protected. Vaccines can prevent illness!
We offer a range of “lifestyle vaccines,” meaning a vaccine that isn’t mandated by law but is often strongly recommended. These are based on your pet’s daily routine and what they come into contact with regularly. At Lake Pine, we recommend the following vaccinations, as we have seen a rise in cases:
Bordetella
Bordetella causes the respiratory illness commonly referred to as “kennel cough.” Pets who spend any time in boarding facilities, doggie daycares, or dog parks should be vaccinated for Bordetella as it, like leptospirosis, is incredibly contagious. It is highly infectious and is transmitted through contact with aerosolized molecules in the air, produced when an infected dog barks or coughs. Dogs can also contract this bacteria from areas where an infected animal has recently been. This vaccine is best for pets who come in close contact with other animals, and the vaccination schedule will depend on your pet’s age and risk factors. It can be given Intranasal, by mouth, or subcutaneously. We recommend the Intranasal vaccine, and we can administer it as often as every six months to 12 months.
Canine Parainfluenza
Canine parainfluenza is a respiratory virus and one of the many viruses that can lead to kennel cough.Much like humans, this highly contagious flu is commonly found in areas where dogs are close to each other, such as doggie daycare, boarding, or dog shows. It is transmitted through contact with infected dogs and can spread through sharing bowls and bedding and through contact such as coughing and sneezing. Canine parainfluenza is known to mutate, so new vaccines should be administered annually to ensure your dog is protected from any new strains of the virus throughout their life. If you think your pup is suffering from canine parainfluenza, take them to your vet immediately. We can test to determine whether your dog is infected and recommend the best course of action.
Talk to your Lake Pine Animal Hospital veterinarian to decide if the parainfluenza vaccine would benefit your pet.
Canine influenza (CIV)
Canine influenza (CIV) is one of the more severe and transmittable illnesses that can threaten our best friends’ well-being. Elderly dogs and those with preexisting conditions are particularly vulnerable, and CIV has had an uptick in occurrences over the past year. Canine Influenza is a highly contagious and aggressive strain of the canine flu that causes fever, loss of appetite, coughing, and nasal discharge. It can quickly develop into pneumonia and even lead to death. CIV is transmitted through close contact with an infected dog, usually in restricted spaces such as animal shelters, daycare centers, or boarding kennels. Based on your dog’s lifestyle, we may recommend the CIV vaccination.
We’re proud to be one of the only clinics in the area to offer internasal vaccines for both bordetella and parainfluenza.
By targeting the upper respiratory tree, these vaccines are a cutting-edge alternative to traditional shots. They go right to the source of infection, jump-starting the immune response just where dogs need it most.
Prevention is your best bet for a healthy pet and peace of mind.
