Wellness Exams
Regular wellness exams are essential for keeping your furry family member healthy. In addition to a thorough physical exam, your pet’s annual wellness visit includes lab work to monitor internal organ function, and screening for parasitic
infections, such as heartworm disease and intestinal parasites. We update your pet’s core vaccines, and discuss other vaccines they may need to remain healthy, based on their lifestyle and environment.
As pets age, their bodies change, and they are more likely to develop conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, and organ failure. After age 7, when your furry family member is considered a senior pet, more comprehensive lab work is performed annually to monitor their health, in order to detect diseases early, when treatments can be more effective. After 10 years of age, we recommend biannual exams and lab work to keep your aging pet in tip-top shape.

Sick Exams
Inappropriate urination? Abnormal behavior? Decreased appetite? Increased thirst? Our furry family members can’t use words to tell us when something is wrong, so they tell us with their actions. If you think your pet is off, we can perform a thorough physical exam. We can even perform radiographs (X-rays) and ultrasound. If you feel that your pet’s condition is an emergency, or they are worsening and we cannot get to you for an immediate appointment, please take them to the nearest emergency hospital, such as Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group (VERG), BluePearl Pet Hospital, or The Animal Medical Center (AMC).

Dentistry
Just as we should have our teeth cleaned routinely, so should our furry family members, and good dental hygiene is essential for keeping your pet healthy. Dental tartar buildup not only makes for stinky kisses, it can also cause kidney, liver, and heart problems. In addition, dental disease and gingivitis are incredibly painful for your pet.
Unlike you, your pet won’t sit still for dental work, so general anesthesia is required to perform a thorough dental cleaning. Prior to anesthesia, we perform blood work to screen for conditions that would increase anesthetic risk. To keep your pet safe throughout the procedure, we monitor your pet closely, using state-of-the-art equipment that measures blood pressure, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, temperature, and heart function. Each dental cleaning includes full-mouth X-rays, scaling, deep root planing, and polishing. If extractions are necessary, we use nerve blocks and pain medications to keep your pet as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

Diagnostic Imaging
In our sincere desire to provide complete comprehensive care, we perform radiographs and ultrasound exams. Our state-of-the-art, X-ray unit allows us to take radiographs that aid in diagnosing conditions such as intestinal foreign bodies and obstructions, tumors, heart disease, lung disease, bladder stones, arthritis, and other bone issues. Ultrasound allows us to visualize your pet’s internal structures, and observe them functioning in real time, to help diagnose many medical problems.

Acupuncture
The healing art of acupuncture has been used for thousands of years, and it was often used as the sole source of pain relief during surgical procedures in ancient Eastern medicine. While we don’t go that far today, acupuncture is still widely used to relieve pain in many situations, particularly arthritic pain. Dr. Atkinson has been a certified acupuncturist for more than 20 years, and is a firm believer in its benefits. She can perform traditional dry needling, as well as laser acupuncture, to provide a more comprehensive holistic approach for your pet.

Health Certificates
Traveling with your pet? Whether you are traveling to another state, or internationally, we can help. As a USDA-accredited veterinarian, Dr. Atkinson is authorized to issue domestic and international health certificates for pets. Contact us as soon as you make travel plans, and share your destination and travel dates, as different countries have varying protocols that must be strictly followed to allow your pet to enter without problems. For example, some international destinations require an entry permit for their country, with specific travel dates. Other countries have regulations regarding rabies vaccinations, microchip placement, and blood tests prior to filling out travel papers. Please be aware that certain destinations require an additional signature from the official USDA veterinarian, which can add several days to the process. To ensure smooth travel, frequently check your country’s entry requirements for changes, and discuss your plans with us well in advance.

We know saying goodbye to your beloved companion is hard. It may be one of the hardest decisions you ever have to make. We have lost pets as well, and understand how you feel. As one of the founding members of Washington State University’s Pet Loss Hotline, Dr. Atkinson also understands the importance of grieving. We believe that every pet should be able to be surrounded by the people who love them, when the time comes to cross the rainbow bridge. It is our strongest desire to make the transition as easy as possible for both you and your furry family member. Afterward, we will take care of all transportation and cremation arrangements, and if you elect for a private cremation, we will deliver your pet’s ashes to your door.

Laser therapy is an alternative treatment modality that can help with arthritis, pulled muscles, orthopedic surgical recovery, and certain neurologic conditions. We use it after every dental and surgical procedure to jumpstart the healing process. During your pet’s exam, if we determine that laser therapy will benefit them, we will schedule another appointment specifically for this service. Ask about our package deals.

As a full-service veterinary provider, we are here for you if your pet needs surgery. Our doctors have a special interest in soft tissue surgery, and Dr. Atkinson was a clinical surgery instructor at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago.
We perform all types of soft tissue surgeries, including but not limited to, spays, neuters, wound repairs, mass removals, and intestinal surgeries. Prior to anesthesia, we perform blood work to screen for conditions that could increase your pet’s risk of complications during the surgical procedure.
