After Surgery: Recovery & Care Guide
General Guidelines
- Refer to your pet’s discharge instructions for specific recommendations.
- Contact us for any additional questions.
- After-hours emergencies should be directed to your local emergency clinic.
- Rest is crucial for healing—limit activity accordingly.

Activity Restrictions
Orthopedic Surgery Recovery (2-3 Months)
- Strict rest is required until healing is complete.
- No running, jumping, climbing furniture, or playing.
- Use a crate or small enclosed area without stairs or furniture.
- Outdoor time should be limited to short, leash-controlled potty walks.
Soft Tissue Surgery Recovery (~3 Weeks)
- Restricted activity to allow the surgical site to heal properly.

Incision & Bandage Care
Monitoring the Incision
- Watch for increased bruising, swelling, or discharge—contact us if noted.
- Prevent licking or chewing with an Elizabethan (E-collar) or alternative protective collar.
- Protect bandages from being chewed or ingested.
Cold Compress Therapy
- Helps reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Apply gently for up to two days post-surgery if tolerated.
Bandage Management
- Must remain clean and dry—cover with a plastic bag outdoors, but remove indoors.
- Check for wetness, slipping, odor, or irritation—these could indicate a problem requiring a recheck appointment.

Digestive Changes Post-Surgery
- Bowel movements may be delayed due to illness, anesthesia, or surgery.
- Small, infrequent stools are normal until your pet is eating regularly again.
- Canned pumpkin can help with mild constipation—contact us for further guidance.
Pain Management
- Pain tolerance varies—if your pet seems uncomfortable, let us know.
- We can adjust medications or dosages as needed for better relief.
